420’s Nationals - New Plymouth

Sailing on the New Plymouth harbour

May 2023 -9 dedicated Tauhara School teens travelled to New Plymouth to participate in the 2024 420’s Nationals where they managed to secure 3rd place in the bronze fleet.

Conditions were challenging, including strong winds that pushed the limits of their boats. Our students sailed exceptionally well considering the limited high-wind training they had over the 2023/34 sailing season in Taupo.

Notably, three of our sailors had only begun sailing last season and were participating in a national event for the first time. Their conduct off the water was equally commendable, as they consistently offered assistance and attended the Anzac Day civic service.

Thanks again to Mr. Butterfield and Tash Brasell for their unwavering support throughout the season. Also a shout out to Shane and Nicola for assuming camp admin duties and to the mums that precooked dinners for the Taranaki road trip. It takes a team to provide these incredible experiences to our youth and we can all say we nailed this one.

To our youth sailors: You represented your families, the LTYC and Tauhara School with pride. Outstanding work! We hope you have inspired the 2024/25 420 sailors to repeat the same performance next season.
