Trailer Yacht/Keeler Sailing
Lake Taupo is an ideal place to sail Trailer Yachts and Keelboats. Over 600 square kilometers of fresh water and 180 km of coastline. LTYC offers a good programme of racing through the warmer months and some gloriously crisp winter sailing. We cater for all trailer yachts, from fast Sports Boats to the smaller 20'ers. The Club racing is held in mixed class format with boats up to 8m competing in our Wednesday Night Series.
Wednesday evening racing in Summer is our most popular sailing. 18:00 start for a 60 to 90 minute 'Round the Buoys' handicap race followed by socialising in the clubhouse. A variety of weekend sailing series are also run during the course of the season including longer bay races, single handed and sprint format races.
Results for Club races are scored using a handicap system, adjusted regularly besad on previous individual performance. Remember, these are set to give everyone an equal chance of success for each Series.
Club Champions will be determined using the results from Championship races indicated in the Sailing Programme. The results in these races are calculated using National Ratings as listed by New Zealand Trailer Yacht Association. For boats without an NZTYA Rating the Club may use an appropriate Club calculated rating.
Our end of the lake is well served with launching ramps and individually lockable storage pens can be leased from the Taupo District Council at the Nukuhau launching facility.
Berths for fixed keel boats may be found in the river and enquiries should be directed to the Harbourmaster, but the waiting list may be long. Come and discuss your requirements with the regular club members.
Crew Members
For those without boats, if you are keen, we can help you find a crew position on one of our regular club member's boats. If you are interested in crewing please register here and your details will be passed onto Skippers looking for crew.
