Secondary School 420’s Sailing

We are now well into an exciting year for Taupo's young secondary school sailors.

This year marks an incredible milestone for the secondary school sailing program at the Lake Taupo Yacht Club, with a record 17 students participating from both Taupo Nui a Tia College and Tauhara College. The biggest group of sailors yet, the students are proving to be a passionate and dedicated bunch, eagerly developing their skills on the water.

Taupo Nui a Tia College is just one sailor short of fielding a complete team, and the enthusiasm among the sailors is palpable. The commitment to learning and teamwork is evident as they continue to improve with each training session. The recent training in high winds provided an invaluable opportunity to practice capsizing drills, which the sailors thoroughly enjoyed. Despite the challenges of sailing in tough conditions, the experience has proven to be an exciting and memorable part of their development.

Looking ahead, the teams are aiming to send two groups to the Nationals in New Plymouth this Apil, a goal that has everyone motivated and focused on refining their skills in the coming weeks. The hard work and enthusiasm of these young sailors reflect the growth of the sailing program in Taupo, and we are all excited to see how they perform at the national level.

A huge thank you goes to coach Jason Butterfield, whose dedication and expertise have been instrumental in the success of the team. His guidance and support have been vital in nurturing these young sailors and pushing them toward reaching their full potential.

Let's continue to cheer on our secondary school sailors as they prepare for an exciting journey to the Nationals, and as they continue to develop both as sailors and as a team!
